For Governments

Some public policymakers are facing challenging technology issues related to digital documents, their preservation, interoperability, standards, and related e-government initiatives. Microsoft is deeply involved in these discussions, and we continue to work with our public and private sector customers, our partners, and our competitors to develop solutions that best respond to the technology challenges facing governments, now and in the future.

As an IT vendor, Microsoft is always listening to and working closely with our customers. Our public and private sector customers are increasingly telling us they want interoperability for digital documents, document preservation, choice in document format standards, and continued innovation. We achieve these goals in many ways, such as by supporting the new international open standard called Open XML, by making any Microsoft patent rights covering Open XML broadly available to all implementers on a royalty-free, perpetual basis, and by endorsing neutral public procurement policies that do not unfairly disadvantage or advantage vendors or business models.
